The Tom Simpson Memorial Stone and Museum in Harworth and Bircotes.

Tom Simpson memorial stone in HarworthWhen the Tom Simpson Memorial Fund was launched in 1996 the response was so generous that there was enough money after the repair on the memorial on Mont Ventoux to erect a memorial stone in Harworth and Bircotes.

The stone was provided free and transported to site by Marshalls Quarry in nearby Stainton, and located at the entrance to the Harworth Miners’ Welfare Sports Pavilion on Scrooby Road, a well-known landmark and venue in Harworth and Bircotes.

Ernie Riley and the people who run the Sports Pavilion provided invaluable support and help in positioning the stone, and they have cared for it ever since. Together with the Sports Pavilion, the Tom Simpson Memorial Fund created a display cabinet inside the building, which is full of Simpson memorabilia that has been loaned to the fund by a number of people.
